WordPress Product Configurator Development

A product configurator is a product page on which the buyer selects options such as size, material, capacity, and finish, and the page displays the resulting build: the image, the specification, and a configuration code that can be used for ordering and production planning. It is suited to products that exist in dozens or hundreds of valid combinations, of which only a few have been photographed. WooCommerce variations are practical for a limited number of stocked combinations; when combinations require their own images, rules, and prices, a dedicated configurator is easier to maintain.

Suitable for

Manufacturers and suppliers of configurable products, including machinery, furniture, doors, cabinetry, and modular systems, whose catalogue shows only a small number of the combinations that can be ordered.

Common challenges

A configurator is appropriate when buyers cannot see the combination they intend to order, when samples or renderings are regularly requested before an order is confirmed, or when sales staff frequently answer questions about how a product looks with different options.

Scope of work

  1. 01Define the available options and the combinations that are not permitted, based on the product rules held by the sales and engineering teams.
  2. 02Draw the product in layers so that the image updates when an option changes.
  3. 03Implement the option rules: options that require another option, options that exclude another option, and minimum quantities that apply only to specific finishes.
  4. 04Assign a configuration code to each build, for use in ordering and production planning.
  5. 05Calculate prices on the page where pricing follows a formula, and route the configuration to an enquiry where it does not.
  6. 06Submit each enquiry with the configuration attached: the code, the image, and each selected option in text.

Examples

The demo below is a task chair configurator. Three frames, four upholsteries, two bases, an optional headrest, and two armrest types produce 96 builds, of which four were photographed. Changing an option updates the drawing, and each build produces a configuration code. The drawing uses 2D layers, which keeps the page lightweight and legible on mobile devices.

Common questions

Can WooCommerce variations be used instead?
WooCommerce variations are suitable for a few dozen combinations, each stocked as a separate item with its own photograph. They do not apply rules between options or generate images for combinations that have not been photographed, and the variation admin screen becomes difficult to manage as the number of rows grows towards a hundred.
How much does a configurator cost?
The cost depends mainly on the rules between options rather than on the number of options. Twenty independent options are relatively simple to implement; six options in which half of the combinations are invalid require more work. A quotation is provided after reviewing the product and its rules.
Are photographs of every combination required?
No. The product is drawn in layers from a smaller set of assets, so 96 builds do not require 96 photo sessions.
Can the configurator display a price?
Yes, when the price can be expressed as a formula. When prices depend on quantity, region, or customer, the buyer configures the product on the page and the price is provided in the quotation reply through the enquiry path.
