ALTERNATIVES
Polylang alternatives for automatic translation
Polylang’s free version puts no limit on how many languages a site has, and manages the structure around them: menus, taxonomies, media, custom post types. What it does not do on the free version is produce the translations — machine translation is listed under Polylang Pro. This page sets out what that distinction means for a site that wants pages translated rather than only organised.
What Polylang does that AumLang does not
- A complete multilingual framework
- Polylang translates menus, widgets, categories, tags, custom post types, taxonomies and media; template parts in the site editor are in Polylang Pro. AumLang covers posts, pages, their metadata and page-builder content, and not the rest of that list.
- Track record and compatibility
- Polylang reports more than 900,000 active installations and documents compatibility with Yoast SEO. AumLang is new and has nothing comparable to show.
- A route for professional translators
- Polylang Pro exports and imports XLIFF, which is how translation agencies work. AumLang has no equivalent.
- No AI account involved
- Polylang’s free version does not call any translation service, so nothing has to be connected and nothing is sent anywhere. AumLang needs an AI connection to do its job at all.
If any of those four matter to the site, Polylang is the correct choice and the rest of this page does not apply.
The difference is translation itself, not the number of languages
This is worth separating from the usual comparison. Polylang’s free version has no cap on languages; its own documentation states there is no limit on the number added. A site can run five languages on it without paying anything.
What the free version does not do is write the translations. Each language is an empty copy until someone fills it in, by hand or through Pro’s DeepL integration.
That suits a site whose translations are written by people. It does not suit a site that expected the plugin to translate the pages.

What happens to a page builder layout
Both plugins store a translated post as its own post, so a builder page has a real translated counterpart in the database in either case.
The difference is who fills it. With Polylang the translated post starts empty and the content is yours to put there; copying the original across before you edit it is a Polylang Pro feature. AumLang reads Elementor’s own control metadata and extracts only the TEXT, TEXTAREA and WYSIWYG controls, including the text controls inside repeaters; every other control type — colour, select, slider, URL, media, dimensions — is never read and never written. That holds for custom widgets as well as standard ones, with no per-widget configuration. Where Elementor’s control metadata is not loaded, a fixed list covering the standard widgets is used instead, and widgets outside that list are left untouched rather than guessed at.
Where the cost goes
Polylang’s free version costs nothing because it does not translate. Adding DeepL means Polylang Pro, and the DeepL account on top.
AumLang has no paid tier, and the provider’s bill is yours. Neither arrangement is free in the sense of no money changing hands once machine translation is involved; they differ in whether a licence sits in front of it.
When to choose which
- Choose Polylang
- if translations are written by people, or the site needs menus, taxonomies and template parts handled as thoroughly as posts.
- Choose Polylang Pro
- if you want that framework and DeepL, and a licence is acceptable.
- Choose AumLang
- if what the site actually needs is the pages translated automatically, in several languages, without a licence in front of the translation.
