ALTERNATIVES
WPML alternatives for WordPress
WPML is sold in three tiers, each including a year of support and updates, and has no free version. A site that needs more than one extra language, and whose owner would rather pay an AI provider directly than a plugin licence, has other options. This page compares them on the things that are checkable: what each free tier allows, and what happens to a page builder layout when its text is replaced.
What WPML does that AumLang does not
- Compatibility work
- WPML has spent years on theme and plugin compatibility and publishes a list of what it has been tested against. AumLang has not done that work, and no equivalent list exists.
- Support
- A WPML licence includes support from a team. AumLang’s support is a wordpress.org forum thread.
- Translation management
- WPML has a translator role with its own permissions, and integrations for ordering human translation through it. AumLang has a review queue of its own, with a machine / reviewed / stale status per translation, but no separate role for a translator and no connection to a translation service.
- Track record
- WPML runs on a very large number of sites. AumLang is new and has nothing comparable to show.
If any of those four matter to the site, WPML is the correct choice and the rest of this page does not apply.

What happens to a page builder layout
Translating a builder page means replacing text inside a structure the builder owns. The question is whether anything other than the text changes.
AumLang reads Elementor’s own control metadata and extracts only the TEXT, TEXTAREA and WYSIWYG controls, including the text controls inside repeaters. Every other control type — colour, select, slider, URL, media, dimensions — is never read and never written. That holds for custom widgets as well as standard ones, with no per-widget configuration; where Elementor’s control metadata is not loaded, a fixed fallback list is used instead.
This describes what the published source does, not a score from one test page. It is stated here because it is the part of this comparison that can be read rather than taken on trust.
Where the cost goes
AumLang has no paid tier and takes no account. It does not follow that translation is free: the plugin either uses the AI provider already connected to WordPress 7.0, or a connection you configure yourself. Either way the provider’s bill is yours.
The difference from WPML is not that nothing is paid for. It is that what is paid for is metered by the provider rather than capped by a licence.
When to choose which
- Choose WPML
- if the site relies on themes or plugins whose compatibility you cannot test yourself, or if you need a human translation workflow, or if paid support is a requirement.
- Choose Weglot or TranslatePress
- if you want translation without holding an AI account at all, and one extra language within a couple of thousand words is enough.
- Choose AumLang
- if the site needs several languages, the pages are built in Elementor or Gutenberg, and you would rather be billed by an AI provider for what you actually translate.
